As social media grows, job search tools and tactics—especially for people seeking social media jobs—continue to get better. Below are five tips from Meltwater on how to find a job in social media. First, however, get to know your social media “don’t-do” list.
- Don’t just hit up Monster and Craigslist like other job seekers
- Don’t mass email your resume
- Don’t use the same template cover letter
Now, it’s time to get to know what you should do. Here are five tips to get you started:
• Check out Mashable Jobs: Tech blog, Mashable, was one of the first to launch a social media job board. It has some of the best and most coveted positions and it’s not oversaturated yet. We suggest getting in before the word gets out.
• Network on LinkedIn: You’ve heard about the importance of networking time and time again, but what is networking worth if you don’t utilize it? So, here’s your friendly reminder: Log on, update your profile, send a few connection requests and get to it! Write recommendations for people in your network, and it’ll remind them to do the same for you. Follow companies that interest you to learn about new job listings and company news. Check out the Meltwater LinkedIn profile for our new listings.
• Search Twitter: #job, #jobsearch, #socialmedia and other relevant hashtags could lead you to your future employer. Whether it’s a desired company’s recruitment team or a link being amplified on the social media network, it doesn’t hurt to peruse the Twittersphere. Plus, you’re less likely to be up against hundreds or thousands of other candidates, since you have to do some digging.
• Visit the MediaBistro Job Board: Have you ever visited the job board on Media Bistro? Sure, the site is great for classes, articles and much more – but their job board is frequently updated and plentiful. Plus, you can organize by location, experience, and industry.
• Join a Facebook Group: Did you know that there are plenty of open groups on Facebook sharing tips and tricks for the job hunt in social media? A quick search for social media groups, even groups under 30 can help you network and land a gig.
The job hunt is tricky and finicky. Being creative can get you places that your stellar GPA cannot. Think outside the box! To search open positions at Meltwater, visit Meltwater job openings.
